Singer out of tune
Excerpt:
Early on, Singer introduces readers
to valiant Wesley; for stout-hearted
Wesley didn’t hesitate to bravely
save a man from an oncoming train.
“What if I told you that you, too, can
save a life, even many lives?” he asks.
This sets the book’s tone. And, to
paraphrase Oscar Wilde, I’d have to
have a heart of stone not to laugh.

Surprise – Princeton Professor Says,
'I Ought to Torture a Terrorist' to
Save New York
Excerpt:
Still, Singer’s openness to “torturing
a terrorist” in order “to stop a
nuclear bomb” is welcome. Today,
toxic moralists claim that torture
in all circumstances is wrong, a
position Sir Winston Churchill – to
his credit - rejected.

From Red China to Regan's America
Mao's Last Dancer has three faces - but don't

Their Favourite Dictator
Chávez even banned the
Simpsons, because they’re
allegedly immoral, as
opposed to the cult of
Fidel Castro. After
ordering the subversive
cartoon family off air,
Venezuelan television
decided to replace them
with Baywatch’s cartoonish
babes, for some questionable
reasons only known to the
dictator.

Julie and Julia
I wanted to like Julie Powell
too, and tried to. I liked the
idea of someone trying to
prepare outdated recipes
from another era, and Amy
Adams is a cute-looking
actress, to be sure. I liked
the idea of a liberal woman
cooking, and even killing
animals to achieve her goal,
in the process. I even liked
the idea of a movie that
acknowledges the fact that
modern women too love
cooking for men. Some
even like wearing pearls
in the kitchen.

Che Lied, Artists Fried
Excerpt:
Clearly, if you’re going to establish
a popular cult, associating with the
Peking-Havana activist scholars
makes sense. But a taste for blood
is key. Che proved himself a real
man by executing a child, without
trial. (Apparently, the malnourished
kid stole some food.) Che showed off
his manliness too by marching into
Havana with Castro and conducting
mass executions inside two major
prisons.
