Their Favourite Dictator
Chávez even banned the
Simpsons, because they’re
allegedly immoral, as
opposed to the cult of
Fidel Castro. After
ordering the subversive
cartoon family off air,
Venezuelan television
decided to replace them
with Baywatch’s cartoonish
babes, for some questionable
reasons only known to the
dictator.

Julie and Julia
I wanted to like Julie Powell
too, and tried to. I liked the
idea of someone trying to
prepare outdated recipes
from another era, and Amy
Adams is a cute-looking
actress, to be sure. I liked
the idea of a liberal woman
cooking, and even killing
animals to achieve her goal,
in the process. I even liked
the idea of a movie that
acknowledges the fact that
modern women too love
cooking for men. Some
even like wearing pearls
in the kitchen.

Clearly, if you’re going to establish
a popular cult, associating with the
Peking-Havana activist scholars
makes sense. But a taste for blood
is key. Che proved himself a real
man by executing a child, without
trial. (Apparently, the malnourished
kid stole some food.) Che showed off
his manliness too by marching into
Havana with Castro and conducting
mass executions inside two major
prisons.
